Could your dog be a lifesaver? Pet Blood Bank UK is currently appealing for dogs in Cumbria to come forward as blood donors to help save the lives of other dogs. The charity particularly needs certain breeds to register for their donation session in Windermere as they are more likely to have negative blood type.
Like humans, dogs have different blood types and negative blood is in very high demand as this can be given to any dog in an emergency. However, with only 30% of dogs having this blood type, keeping up with supplies is challenging. This is why Pet Blood Bank needs certain breeds to come forward, as they are more likely to have his vital blood type. These breeds include German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Flat Coated Retrievers, Pointers, Greyhounds, Lurchers, Boxers, Old English Sheepdogs, and Weimaraners.
Oakhill Veterinary Group in Windermere is one of Pet Blood Bank’s host venues where dogs can go to donate blood. Their next donation session is being held on Thursday 13 February and dogs are urgently needed to come forward. The service is truly lifesaving as every donation can help save the lives of up to four other dogs.
The donation sessions run very similarly to the human blood service. Dogs receive a health check with a vet before donating 450ml of blood. The donation itself only takes 5-10 minutes. Unlike humans, however, dogs receive treats from the moment they arrive and get a goody bag and toy to take home.
To become a donor, your dog must weigh more than 25kg, be between the ages of 1 and 8, and be fit and healthy.
