A MAN has told a jury an allegation that he tried “ram” a vehicle driven by his estranged wife “off the road” in Maryport did not happen.
Carl Ralph Glover, 32, denies one charge alleging dangerous driving, and has gone on trial at Carlisle Crown Court.
Giving evidence today (MON), Cindy Glover told jurors she travelled along Maryport’s Mealpot Road in a Hyundai with front seat passenger mother, Sandra McGuirk and two children in rear seats. It was dark, just after 7pm on October 14, 2018, and she spoke of seeing Glover in a white Ford Focus ST travelling towards her.
“Carl’s car came towards us. He then pulled on to my side of the road,” she said. “I had to pull in and brake fast or he would have hit us.” She added: “At the very last minute he swerved back on to his side of the road and drove off.”
Mrs Glover was left “frightened, shocked, upset” and “worried about the children”. “He looked out of his window, out of his side window and he was just smirking as he went past,” she told the jury.
In a 999 call, Mrs Glover told an operator: “Carl Glover’s just tried to ram us off the road.”
But Glover, giving evidence, said there was no such incident.
“Did you swerve in front of her?” asked his barrister, Kim Whittlestone. Glover replied: “No.”
“Did you have any contact with her her at all during the course of that day?” Miss Whittlestone asked Glover, of Gray Street, Workington. He responded: “No.”
Asked about Mrs Glover’s allegation by police, he had stated: “I just think she is trying to get me in lots of trouble.”
