Carlisle College Joinery apprentice Ross Fiori has been selected to represent Squad UK in Joinery.
Ross, who won a Silver Medal in the National SkillBuild competition and represented Carlisle College at the UK Finals in Birmingham has been selected to join Squad UK.
Mark Miller, carpenter in the BBC show ‘DIY SOS’ gave a speech at the competition saying: “Events like this open people’s eyes and give them a glimpse into a career in construction. We put roofs over people’s heads and can be proud of what we do. The world is your oyster if you qualify with an apprenticeship.”
As part of Squad UK Ross will now undertake ‘Back to Basics Training’ for 5 days to make the first selection that will compete at the EuroSkills in Graz, Austria in September and with a chance to compete against the rest of the word at Worldskills 2021 in Shanghai.
Ross who is currently completing his Level 2 Bench Joinery Apprenticeship is employed by Langley Furniture Works and attends Carlisle College to complete his training.
Ross said: “Competing in the finals was already an amazing experience but to be potentially representing the UK internationally takes it to another level.”
Grant Glendinning, Principal at Carlisle College said: “This is an incredible achievement and reflects the high level of skills and professional attitude Ross has shown at College, at his workplace and throughout the competition.”
Carlisle College is currently working with over 350 employers and 700 apprentices with apprenticeships ranging from Level 2 up to degree level and in areas such as Accounting, Digital Marketing and Leadership & Management to IT, Motor Vehicle, Engineering and the construction trades.
The next opportunity to find out more about apprenticeships at Carlisle College is Carlisle Skills Fair, which takes place at the Sands Centre in Carlisle from 3pm – 7pm on the 6th February 2020.
There will be representation from a number of businesses and training providers based in Carlisle on hand to discuss the many options.
