A WOMAN has admitted stealing a gold ring after breaking into a pensioner’s West Cumbria flat.
Kymberley Joanne Bennewith – also known as Kymberley Simm – committed the offence while the occupant, a man aged in his 80s, was away from his ground floor Woodstock Lane property in Whitehaven.
Bennewith, 31, pleaded guilty to one offence when she appeared at Carlisle Crown Court for an afternoon hearing in front of Judge Peter Davies.
She admitted burglary by entering the Whitehaven address as a trespasser, stealing both a gold ring and a mobile phone, on November 3 last year.
Bennewith, of Cross Street, Whitehaven, was due to have appeared in front of the judge in person in the dock earlier in the day. But when she refused to board a bus which was due to transport her from prison to court, the hearing was delayed.
When she did finally appear, over a video link from custody, she expressed a wish through her barrister, Brendan Burke, to be sentenced immediately for the offence she admitted.
But Judge Davies said there was insufficient court time in which to do so. “I’m going to keep you waiting instead because you kept me waiting this morning,” the judge said as he adjourned her case.
Bennewith is due to receive her punishment for the burglary on Friday of this week, and was remanded in custody in the meantime.
