On Friday 31st January, over 50 children from local schools joined the music department at Hunter Hall School in Penrith for a small schools music event.
Pupils from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from Temple Sowerby CofE Primary School and Kirkby Thore Primary School, joined the children at Hunter Hall for singing and music activities during the afternoon.
Hunter Hall Music Captains Samuel and Evie from Year 6, joined in the fun alongside other instrumentalists from Years 3-6 which included saxophone, clarinet, flute, viola, drums, double bass, guitar, cornet plus Andrew Roze (one of the school’s peripatetic music teachers) played his electric guitar.
The event consisted of singing activities including warm ups and part-singing, with three different songs put together with actions. There was also an instrumental workshop listening to sounds of different instruments and talking about how to play them. Finally there was a friendship song to mix all the children up from the different schools.
The event was the brain child of Mrs Lynsey Wrightson, the Head of Music at Hunter Hall. The idea behind having a music event was to reach out to smaller schools who don’t have a music specialist in their own school. They also wanted the event to specifically be for the younger school years, as there is not as much provision in the area as there is for older children involved in music groups.
Overall the event was to have FUN together and try something new, to learn about different instruments and to get everyone involved in music!
Lynsey said: “The event was a great success. We had lots of fun, were able to share how exciting and enjoyable music can be and the children were really eager to learn more. We were also able to share ideas with the other schools involved and start thinking about how the event can evolve in the future.”
The school is encouraging any other local schools to get in touch if they would like to be involved in any future music events.
