Barbara Cannon

Barbara Cannon has been selected as Labour’s candidate to stand as Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria in the election on the 8th of May.

Barbara is a proud Cumbrian who has worked for many years in economic development helping people find work or set up their own business. She worked for the council Careers Service, in the voluntary sector as well as in a TUC Centre for the unemployed helping young people find work.

She has experience of overseeing large organisations and was Chair of the North Cumbria Hospital Trust. She has been a local councillor for many years and understands how crime and anti-social behaviour affects people’s everyday lives.

Speaking after the announcement, Barbara said: “I’m very honoured to be selected to be the candidate for Labour in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May.  We need a Labour Police and Crime Commissioner now more than ever to stand up to Tory police cuts.

“I was born, raised and have spent all my life in Cumbria and am dedicated to the area and its people.  The Tories have cut the number of police on the streets across Cumbria and crime has gone up.  I am determined to be a Police and Crime Commissioner with the backbone to stand up to their irresponsible cuts.

“I will prioritise front line policing, crack down on criminals, have zero tolerance to anti-social behaviour and hate crime and be a champion for the victims of crime.”
