Property Fund Making a Difference in Barrow

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall will be stepping into the ring at Furness Boxing Club, Barrow and attending Dalton Cadets on Monday 17 February to see first-hand how equipment purchased from the Property Fund is being put to good use. The property fund re-invests money seized from criminal activity and distributes it into local projects, aimed at providing activities that help to reduce crime in communities across Cumbria.

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall comments: “It is good to see that money seized from criminals, is then awarded to community projects and local groups, providing opportunities and funds where they are needed most.

“Being part of a club provides role models, teamwork and training opportunities for young people who may otherwise be left with nothing to do and at risk of becoming on the fringe of anti-social behaviour.

“It is important to channel young people’s energy in a guided manner, following set rules and regulations, as this helps them to develop respect, discipline and healthy life choices.”

Michael Ryan, Furness Catholic Amateur Boxing Club secretary comments: “Our club offers a welcoming, warm, positive physical activity for people of all ages to do in the centre of Barrow free of charge and we are delighted that we were successful in our application to the Commissioner’s Property Fund.

“The new equipment has resulted in the club being able to open its doors to more members who can attend free of charge Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.”

Company Sergeant Major Kenny Brown, Burma Company, Cumbria Army Cadet Force comments: “The equipment has been already used for various trial expeditions in preparation for the cadet’s Silver and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

“It’s great to be able to purchase new kit and the cadets take real pride in looking after this specialised outdoor equipment.

“The Duke of Edinburgh Award aids our Young Leaders and helps to instil self-confidence, teamwork, life skills, and team cohesion. It also gives them a sense of belonging and as an internationally recognised award, assist them with their CV’s in young adult life.”
