Council offers funding to encourage communities to mark VE Day

Workington Town Council is offering funding of up to £300 for groups in the community to host their own VE Day event.

When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020, it will be 75 years since the end of the war in Europe.

The nation will be celebrating with street parties and tea parties and remembering the enormous sacrifice that was made at home and abroad.  The community is encouraged to celebrate, as people did 75 years ago, the arrival of peace in Europe.

Applicants can submit a funding form to Workington Town Council for up to £300 to organise their own event, which should be open to the public and free of charge. Your event does not have to be held on VE Day/weekend itself, it can be held on another date that is more suitable for the venue / group concerned.

Cllr Carole Armstrong, Chair of the Town Council’s Culture Committee, said: “This is an important day for us to remember and we really encourage the community to come together and take advantage of the funding available.

“The Town Council also invites everyone to join us for a special ceremony in Vulcan Park at 3pm on Friday 8th May, where we will unveil our special memorial garden.”
