A union which represents workers at Sellafield has donated £300 to the Mayor of Allerdale’s chosen charities.

During her year in office the Mayor, Hilary Harrington has been raising money for We Will, a Maryport-based charity which is raising awareness of mental health issues, particularly in young people, and the Allerdale Disability Association.

Various groups and organisations raise funds for the charities throughout the year with special events, such as the Allerdale Civic Dinner, also hosted to raise money for the Mayor’s good causes.

The latest donation received by the Mayor is from the GMB Union Sellafield Branch. Each year a proportion of the members’ contributions to the union are given back to the branch with these funds then donated to local good causes.

Roger Denwood, deputy convenor of the branch, said: “We were more than happy to support the Mayor of Allerdale’s chosen charities and support the good work they do in the community.”

Cllr Harrington said: “The donation made by the GMB’s Sellafield branch is hugely welcome and I’d like to thank their members for choosing to support my charities. These charities are absolutely vital to the local area and I’d encourage other people to support them.”
