The artistic talents of primary school children will be on display across the whole of Allerdale as creative anti-littering and dog fouling messages have been put on permanent display – on the side of a road sweeper.
In the summer pupils from St Bridget’s CofE School, Brigham, took part in a littering workshop organised by Allerdale Borough Council and as part of the exercise produced a number of posters to put up in the village.
The posters encouraged people not to litter, reminded people to pick up after their dogs and to try to recycle and reuse more.
The Council’s education and enforcement manager Claire McAvoy, who led the workshops, worked with about 100 children teaching them all about the environment and how communities can help keep it clean and tidy.
Claire picked the best of the posters produced and arranged for them to be displayed on the side of a road sweeper operated by Tivoli, who carry out street cleaning work on behalf of the Council. The winners from St Bridget’s were Leon Lee, 10, Jed Rodgers, nine, and Olivia Carruthers, 11.
“I thought the work the youngsters created was so good it deserved to be seen by as many residents in Allerdale as possible,” Claire said.
“That’s why we decided to work with our street cleaning partners Tivoli to have the posters put on the sweeper so the important messages could be taken to all corners of the borough while the vehicle is out and about.”
Tony Markley, Allerdale Executive member for environmental services, said: “It’s crucial that we help spread the messages of how best to keep our environment clean and getting young people involved in that is fantastic.
“Allerdale is a beautiful area and we must all work together to keep it that way so we can deliver on the pledge in our Council Strategy – a cleaner, greener borough.”
Emma Sidwell, who teaches class three at St Bridget’s, said: “Our children absolutely loved Claire’s workshops and learned so much about littering and how to keep our community looking its best.
“The pupils are really passionate about this subject and I know they’re delighted that they’re helping to spread this kind of message far and wide.”
