Regretfully it has been decided to cancel the VE Day event in Penrith on 8th May and Brougham Hall Wartime Weekend which was planning to run from 8th – 10th May.
A Penrith Town Council spokesman said: “Public health and safety must come first and in these uncertain times we simply do not know how Covid 19 (Coronavirus) will progress.
“We have been awaiting advice from the Queen’s Pageant Master however, given that over 4000 people usually attend the Brougham Hall event and travel from all over England and the latest Government advice includes the avoidance of unnecessary travel, social distancing and the avoidance of social events for a provisional 12 week period, we need to take a decision early.
“It is unlikely that we will be able to reschedule for later this year and will look to rearrange for May 2021.
“Thanks must go to Brougham Hall Wartime Weekend, Penrith Lions, Penrith Rotary, Penrith BID and Steve Wilde from EDC for all the work that has gone into making the arrangements for this day and to the individuals and community groups in the town who were planning complimentary events to mark VE Day 75
“We would like to thank everyone involved including our supporters and funders. This is an unprecedented situation but we will continue to work towards making next year’s event a memorable one and hope to see you there.”
