Children across the Carlisle district are being encouraged to get creative by taking part in a recycle for Carlisle competition.

Open to all Carlisle district children aged up to 11-years-old, the Get Creative competition is an opportunity to get painting and crafting, with the chance to win arts and crafts products.

Organised by Carlisle City Council as part of the build up to Recycle Week (21 – 27 September), local youngsters are being asked to take photos of their amazing creations – themed on recycling – and send them into the council to be entered into their competition.

There will be three age categories: 3 – 4-year-olds; 5 – 7-year-olds and 8 to 11-year-olds. The winner of each category will receive an arts and craft pack worth £25 and the overall winner will receive an arts and crafts pack totalling £50.

Please send one entry per child, to [email protected] Please include the child’s first name, age and the area they live in within Carlisle e.g. Denton Holme, Brampton etc. Please note no personal details will be published without consent.

Entries can be sent in from Monday 24 August and the deadline to take part is Friday 25 September.  After the winners have been announced, photos of the winning creations will be available to see on the council’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The photos of the children’s artwork will be judged by the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Marilyn Bowman and Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, Cllr Nigel Christian.

Cllr Nigel Christian, Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport said: “During the Coronavirus pandemic we’ve been overwhelmed by the support of local residents. Our refuse and recycling crews received gifts and we were sent lots of lovely hand-crafted messages. Our Get Creative competition is our way of thanking local children and giving them an opportunity to take part – with prizes for different age categories and the overall winner. The arts and crafts could be painted posters, models of refuse and recycling vehicles made out of recycled materials or even draw or create your favourite refuse or recycling crew member or anything else themed on Recycle for Carlisle. Be as creative as you’d like – we can’t wait to see what will be produced!”

Now in its 17th year, Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling, organised by WRAP under the Recycle Now brand.

This year, the theme will thank the nation for continuing to recycle despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented, under the banner ‘Together – We Recycle’.
