A public consultation on how climate change could be tackled has started today (Friday, 28 August).
A draft ‘Carlisle Local Environment (Climate Change) Strategy’ sets out how Carlisle City Council will tackle environmental issues and is now out for public consultation until Friday 18 September 2020.
Views are also sought on the draft strategy and its proposed actions. The strategy is accompanied by a consultation document, setting out the background and context.

Carlisle City Cllr Nigel Christian, Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said: “We want to play our full role in protecting the environment and in the worldwide movement which aims to tackle climate change. Our draft Climate Change Strategy shows our commitment to the issue.
“The key to the success of this strategy, reaching net zero, will depend upon a co-ordinated and comprehensive programme of communication and engagement to encourage behavioural change by residents and businesses. We need to work in partnership to reduce the carbon footprint for Carlisle and we’re keen for as many people as possible to comment on our draft plans and to have their say.”
As part of the public consultation, the council is asking the public what they think about the draft strategy, its vision, objectives, actions and target. To help with feedback, they have set out some key questions for residents and businesses to consider when giving their comments.
The overall purpose of the strategy is to co-ordinate a programme of action, communication and engagement to encourage behavioural change. The strategy is a starting point, a first step towards a clear, confident approach to the challenge of Climate Change. An approach that will build commitment to behavioural change.
The unprecedent Public Health emergency brought about by COVID-19 Pandemic has meant that the council has had to rethink all our public consultation, moving to more digital and online platforms.

Following the consultation, the Members’ Advisory Group and Officer Working Group will review the responses to the draft strategy and action plan. The finalised documents will be presented to the Executive and then Council for approval.
