John Stevenson MP promotes annual flood action campaign

John Stevenson MP

John Stevenson, the MP for Carlisle, is promoting the Environment Agency’s annual campaign this winter, which aims to inform the public about the risks of flooding and to help them take action to prepare in case they receive a flood warning.

The annual flood action campaign (‘Prepare. Act. Survive.’) runs from October through to March and encourages residents to learn about what they should do if there is a risk of flooding.

With only 50% of people in Cumbria signed up to flood warnings, it is important to get the ‘be prepared’ message out across the county, as having a plan can significantly reduce the impact of flooding on people’s lives and livelihoods. This includes reducing the damages to a home and possessions, minimising risk to life, and reducing the likelihood of suffering from mental health impacts in the future.

This year, the Environment Agency are focusing their campaign on people who live in areas at high risk of flooding, but who have not yet experienced flooding to their home. This is to encourage them to download their ‘Prepare. Act. Survive.’ flood plan and to sign up to flood alerts, which will help to reduce their risk.

John Stevenson said: “The Environment Agency’s annual flood action campaign is incredibly important for raising awareness of the risks of flooding and the impact it could have on your home. Please do download a flood plan and sign up to flood warnings online, so that you can be confident that you are prepared this winter.”
