Workington RNLI

Workington RNLI were called out to their first rescue this year after a man and his dog were cut off by the tide while walking on a beach in West Cumbria.

The man and his sheepdog were walking on Harrington shore just before 11am, when the tide came in.

He called Cumbria police for help.

Workington RNLI launched the John F Mortimer, its inshore lifeboat, at 11am, while Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team were dispatched to conduct a search.

The volunteer RNLI crew helped the man and his dog aboard their vessel and to safety.

Both man and dog are safe and well.

Tim Chittenden, operations manager for Workington RNLI, said: “We would urge anyone considering taking advantage of the fine weather for a walk on the beach to take steps to avoid this happening to them.
“Before you head out, check the tide tables and while you’re out, be aware of your surroundings and the tide’s direction.”
