A man and his son have appeared in court today to face charges related to modern slavery.
Peter Swailes, 80, of Hadrian Park, Brampton Road, Carlisle, and Peter Swailes jnr, 55, of Crindlebeck Stables, Low Harker, Carlisle are accused of “conspiring to arrange or facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation.”
They both appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court by video link.
It is alleged that between July 31, 2015 and April 25, 2019 they conspired together with others to arrange or facilitate the travel of a British man with a view to him being exploited, contrary to Common Law Act 1977.
No pleas were entered and District Judge John Temperley sent the case to be heard at Carlisle Crown Court on April 6.
Both men were released on unconditional bail.
The allegation arises from an investigation carried out by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority.
It is understood that the man, in his 50s, lived in a 6ft shed near Carlisle for decades.
