Four Cumbrian towns have been ranked in the 20 most affordable places to live in the UK, according to new research.

Property site Zoopla compared Office for National Statistics figures for gross household earnings with the average property price.

Cleator Moor was the second most affordable place to live with gross household earnings of £82,924 and median house prices of £96,269. This means it would take households in the town 1.16 years (before tax) to pay for the average house.

Egremont was fifth on the list, with the same figure for gross household earnings and an average house price of £80,694. This is a price to earnings ratio of 1.29, meaning it would take a household 1.29 years to earn enough income (before tax) to pay for the average home.

Two other Cumbrian towns also made the top 20. Millom has an average property price of £121,565 and the same gross household earnings as the previous two. This was enough for the town to rank in 12th place, with a price to earnings ratio of 1.47.

Whitehaven is ranked 16th on the list, with the same gross household earnings and a £122,685 average house price. This is a price to earnings ratio of 1.48.
