Family’s £400 thank you to special care baby unit

A family has donated more than £400 to South Lakes Birth Centre and the Special Care Baby Unit at Furness General Hospital to say thank you for the care they received for their premature daughter.

Melissa and Ben Kavanagh, of Askam-in-Furness, raised £415 with a Grand National sweepstake, and recently visited the hospital with baby daughter Grace and son George to present the money to Bay Hospitals Charity and the maternity team.

Melissa said: “Having a baby at 26 weeks is very scary, and as a family we wanted to be able to give something back to our local unit.

“The birth centre helped us immensely on our journey both before and after Grace was born.

“We hope that the money can go towards things that both units will benefit from and it is nice knowing that we have been able to contribute to them.

“We wouldn’t be able to have got through this without support from family, friends and all the amazing staff.”

Special Care Baby Unit clinical leader Gillian Renshaw said: “We are so grateful as a team that so many people go above and beyond to help us raise funds for our unit.

“Without the dedication of people raising funds, we would not be able to provide the small comforts that we provide for the babies and their families.”

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust chief nurse and deputy chief executive Sue Smith OBE said: “It makes me really happy to see little Grace and know that she and her family received great care from our wonderful team at Furness General Hospital.

“We’ve very grateful for this donation from the Kavanagh family and we will ensure it is put to good use.”
