Customers of Furness Building Society generated almost £2,000 for Barrow Foodbank.
At the building society’s annual meeting, customers are invited to vote on issues including the re-election of directors and directors’ pay.
For every vote received, Furness Building Society makes a donation to charity and this year it chose to support the foodbank.
Claire Coulthurst, project manager at Barrow Foodbank, said: “Last year we fed 5,023 people and of those 2,045 were children.
“At the beginning of the pandemic, we had some external help, which meant we were able to operate a delivery service, unfortunately, this assistance stopped and it’s something we carried on ourselves at the foodbank.
“This means that our overheads have increased, so the money Furness has donated is very much appreciated.”
Sarah Wane, marketing manager at Furness, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to help people in our local communities.
“As a building society, it’s important that we’re able to give back to our community and especially to those who are struggling to put food on the table.
“We recognise that Barrow Foodbank work really hard to support local people, not just by providing help with food but offering support with other aspects of life, which they might be finding difficult.
