School pupils will get a valuable insight into an engineering career thanks to one of Cumbria’s leading employers in the sector.
To mark International Women in Engineering Day tomorrow the submarines, business and the air divisions at Barrow-based BAE Systems will team up to offer online presentations to pupils across the country.
The company’s science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) ambassadors will show students a presentation, followed a question and answer session about engineering.
The event, titled Your Future Engineered aims to be as broad as possible and will be open to both boys and girls.
The aim is to encourage all students, especially women who are currently under-represented, to get involved and hopefully pursue a career in engineering.
Among the STEM ambassadors will be Lesley Dixon, head of commercial on the Astute submarine programme.
She said: “I’m privileged to be given the opportunity to support this amazing event to recognise women in Engineering. This year represents the 150th year of the Submarines business and this opportunity provides a platform to encourage the next generation to continue this legacy for the next 150 years and beyond.”
