Scott Allison scored the only goal of the game this afternoon as Workington Reds won 1-0 at Penrith in both clubs’ opening friendly.
It was a tidy finish in the 32nd minute from the former Penrith forward, who has gone on to become a record goal-scorer for the West Cumbrians.
Reds dominated possession against a gritty Penrith side and the outcome was a competitive work-out for both teams.
Penrith were closest to scoring when Max Brown hit the post from their best chance of the game.
Steven Rudd, in charge of the Reds following the departure of Danny Grainger and until the board decide on a new manager, used 17 players during the work-out.
He said: “For a first game it was very useful.
“Obviously there are plenty of things to work on but Penrith gave us a good game and we were looking to get minutes into our players which we achieved.
“It was good to keep a clean sheet and limit their opportunities, but I think we have a bit more work to do in the final third where we were a bit wasteful.
“Our two new signings showed good signs. Kieran played the first half and looked good, and will be even better when he settles in.
“Iyrwah looked lively at times but we have to get the ball to him more and I’m sure we will see that happen.
“All in all I’m pleased that we’ve got back into action and have a week now to prepare for the next one at Berwick next Saturday.
“They start the following week with League football so they are almost ready to go and it will be a good test.”
