Remarkable run feast at Sowerby Cup semi-final

The Sowerby Cup semi-final at Seascale between the home club and Egremont produced a remarkable run feast.

A total of 550 runs were scored in just 80 overs with Egremont going through to the final where they will play Ulverston, who beat Furness by five wickets.

The top two sides produced a cracking game but Seascale will probably regret their decision to invite Egremont to bat after winning the toss. It was probably made with a view to the forecast showers.

After losing captain Jack Stubbings early on for nought, Alex Hodgson batted superbly for 103. Others chipped in until opening bowler Cody Scott came in and smashed the ball to all parts for the second century of the Innings.

The local Bowling Club was under constant fire from the barrage of sixes and he was out on the last ball of the game for a splendid innings of 112.It left Seascale with a big ask in scoring 326 to win. Lee Fleet was the pick of their bowlers with 3-53.

Seascale kept up with the asking rate but lost wickets at a regular intervals and were all out in the 35th over for a creditable 222, with Steve Brown junior top scoring with 44 batting at number ten.

Dave Raynor was the best bowler for Egremont  with 6-58.

Umpire Gordon McCullough said: “Congratulations must go to Steve Brown and his ground staff for producing a cracking batting wicket.”
