A Whitehaven woman’s mammoth baking session has raised more than £1,000 for charity.
Denise Hyslop made which included 68 gingerbreads, 48 lemon drizzle cakes, 18 coffee cakes, 16 chocolate cakes, 22 Victoria cakes, 40 red velvet cupcakes, 30 unicorn cupcakes, 48 Terry’s chocolate orange cupcakes, 48 lemon meringue cupcakes and 24 packs of cheese scones for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Denise, with her family and friends, raised £1,060 by selling cakes to order from the garden of her home and also sold £300 of baked good bakes to her daughter’s friends and colleagues at the West Cumberland Hospital.
“It was unbelievable to smash the £1,000 mark,” said Denise. “I never imagined I would raise so much. It’s definitely something I would encourage other people to do. You don’t even need to bake your own cakes you can buy them and have a little party at your house- every little helps.”
Denise said: “What a great day we had. I could not have done it without the help of my good friend Lynn who was up at 5am and baked 170 scones.
“Lynn then came to me and her and I had a little production line going filling sandwich cakes. While we were doing all that my two daughters Gill, Lisa and grandson Joseph and granddaughter Eva packaged up the boxes with cakes then into bags ready for collection.
“Gill and Eva then took charge of the raffle and the quizzes. Lynn and I then met our customers and Lisa found the orders and checked they were right before we handed them over.
“It’s amazing to know the funds raised will go towards helping people affected by dementia.”
Denise joined thousands of supporters who came together across the UK to whip up a treat for Cupcake Day on June 17, and throughout the month of June, to support the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK.
