England vs Italy Euro 2020 Final

Police in Cumbria were called to 19 incidents connected with fans watching England’s historic final against Italy – as Cumbria police praise the majority for behaving in a “sensible and respectful way”.

England lost on penalties to the Italians last night in their first-ever European Championship Final and their first major final since 1966.

Cumbria Constabulary was on high alert for the game, with an increased presence seen across the county.

Superintendent Gaynor Wardle said: “The police would like to thank the community for their support last night. Sunday evening was a night of celebration, socialising, supporting the local economy and commiseration. The majority of the public celebrated in a sensible and respectful way.

“The constabulary had robust plans in place to support those out to have a positive night.  Across the whole of Cumbria last night, there were only 19 reported incidents that had connection to those watching the football.

“Also of note, is that there were no major incidents reported, no criminal damage and the few injuries reported were minor. Whilst any crime is unacceptable, the overall perspective was positive.

“Those suspected of committing criminal offences were dealt with swiftly and accordingly by officers.

“The police and partner agencies worked together in the run-up to Sunday night to ensure protocols were in place to minimise offences and keep the public safe. Positive action included, the proactive issuing of two dispersal orders; giving the police enhanced powers to ban drunken persons from entering Barrow town centre or Carlisle town centre for the evening.

“The closing of Botchergate to traffic, increased patrols in the city centres and high footfall areas and positive engagement with revellers.

“The acts of a few though, should absolutely not take away from the fact the majority of the public were fantastic and showed what true community spirit is.”

The force confirmed that it only received one report from West Cumbria.
