Carlisle Crown Court

A mother has admitted child cruelty crimes by failing to ensure a medical condition was properly treated and allowing youngsters to sleep in an unsanitary bedroom.

The woman, who can’t be identified to protect the identity of the children, pleaded guilty to three charges of cruelty to a person aged under 16 when she appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today.

All three of her offences were committed in an Eden district village between September 2017, and January of the following year.

Court papers show that all three crimes involved the woman wilfully neglecting children “in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health” by failing to ensure that a medical condition was treated properly.

Two of the charges also involve the woman allowing youngsters “to sleep in a bedroom that was unsanitary”.

In addition, the court heard the woman had admitted possessing class A drug cocaine at a previous hearing. That offence was committed in January 2018.

Recorder Kate Bex QC adjourned the case and ordered the preparation of a probation service report exploring a number of issues, including the reasons behind the defendant’s offending.

This will also assess all possible sentencing options, including custody. The woman is due to be sentenced by a judge at the crown court on August 13. In the meantime, she was granted bail by Recorder Bex.
