Ben Stokes, the England star with strong Cockermouth connections, is to take an “indefinite break” from all forms of cricket.
Stokes has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming Test series against India and his place is being taken by Craig Overton of Somerset.
The 30-year-old all-rounder says he will prioritise his mental well-being and reset his left index finger which has not yet fully healed.
The news was released in a statement by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
New Zealand-born Stokes came to England when his father Ged was appointed coach of the Workington Town rugby league team.
Although a very good rugby player, the young Stokes proved a talented cricketer at the Cockermouth club and was signed by Durham.
