A charity auction in Windermere raised more than £400 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and coming under the auctioneer’s hammer was…cake.
The Lake District Cake of the Year contest was staged at a summer fair at St Martin and St Mary’s school in Windermere.
Visitors bid for the cakes – decorated with the theme of joy – and are now eating them at home, and filling out a review, based on taste and appearance.
The winner will be announced at the end of next week.
The fair was attended by families enjoying a community event for the first time in many months.
They were entertained by flying birds from Lake District Falconry, music from Lake District Radio broadcasting live, stalls, lunch provided by Yardies Jamaican Street Food of Windermere, and there was a bouncy castle and a crafts corner.
The event was organised by Jen Braithwaite, of JB Consulting, who helped stage the first Lake District cake contests some years ago.
It was revived this summer after Jen had worked on a number of events with the Teenage Cancer Trust.
“We thought it was time to bring some joy back into people’s lives after such a long, difficult period,” said Jen.
“The occasion was wonderful, the community coming together to celebrate and have an afternoon of fun, while raising money for a very important charity.”
The event was sponsored by James Cropper plc and supported by many local organisations and businesses with raffle prizes including Windermere Lake Cruises, Cunninghams Outdoors, Fullpoint Design, Cedar Manor, Zeffirellis, and Mathilde’s café in Grasmere.
The auctioneer was Wayne Singleton of Lake District Radio.
Emma Cross, of the Teenage Cancer Trust, with a host of volunteers from the charity, helped decorate the school hall and stalls in the grounds.
The Teenage Cancer Trust is a cancer care and support charity in the UK that exists to improve the cancer experience of young people aged 13 to 24.
It provides specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals, and train and fund staff who are teenage cancer specialists.
