Workington won the Higson Cup with an outstanding team performance at Haverigg against holders Furness.
Going into the game as underdogs against the Cumbria League Premier Division’s top side, the West Cumbrians responded perfectly – especially after a disappointing home League defeat the day before.
Leading from the front, Workington skipper Matty Lowden gave his side the perfect start by dismissing both openers in a particularly mean and penetrating opening spell.
Young Ben Scott then had Furness pro Promod Maduwantha caught behind by Callum Moffat and at 8-3 they were in deep trouble.
A fourth wicket stand of 57 threatened to put Furness back in contention but Lowden had Bradley Chapples caught by Grant Reid for 35 and the innings never regained momentum.
The dangerous Mark Daly, with a restrained 18 from 56 deliveries, was caught by Liam Hazzard off Lewis Hull and Workington were able to scythe through the tail.
David Pearce took the last four wickets at a cost of only nine and Furness were bowled-out for an unexpectedly low score of 87. The admirable Lowden finished with 4-5 from his seven overs.
Opener Callum Moffat (44) controlled the Workington reply and when he was fourth out the job was nearly done with 70 runs on the board.
There were a couple more scares but Callum Sutton (14no) saw them over the line with four wickets and 11.4overs to spare.
Workington last won the Higson Cup in their treble-winning year of 2016 but over the years it has not graced the club’s trophy cabinet on too many occasions.
