A Cumbrian nurse has walked a marathon distance with her baby on her back to raise cash for charity.

Lisa Wharton, 33, of Appleby, walked 26.2 miles with her baby on her back to raise money for Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

She decided to complete the challenge after she was diagnosed with the condition on the same day she found out she was eight weeks pregnant with her son, Bowen.

Lisa, who was previously part of the Keswick district nursing team, said: “For someone who is used to being active, I was completely wiped out.

“I spent six months in hospital and could barely get out of bed.”

Lisa and Bowen, who was carried in a special rucksack, walked different routes every day including Dufton Pike and Lacy’s Caves until they reached their goal.

Lisa raised £190.

Lisa added: “I have previously raised money for the charity.

“My grandfather Geoff, died two years ago and was the first person in the UK to have a stoma fitted.

“While I was on maternity leave, I thought I’d take up the challenge. Bowen weighs about 14 kilos so it was a good workout for me.”

Lisa is due to return to work next month after her maternity leave.

She spent much of her pregnancy shielding and will return to work in the medical procedures unit at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

She said: “They’re a great team and I am looking forward to it. I will be helping people with infusions, biopsies and blood transfusions.”
