Cheap rents and low beer prices have seen Carlisle revealed as the second best UK city for graduates – beating the likes of Newcastle and Birmingham.
Internet price comparison site Compare the Market carried out research into the best city for graduates, based on factors including job adverts, salaries, rent prices, utilities and the cost of a pint.
First was Bradford, with an overall satisfaction score of 59.7 per cent but Carlisle came in a close second with 57.6 per cent.
Research found the Border city had the lowest price of rent at £418.75 for a one-bedroom flat in the city centre compared to Westminster at £1,968.57.
Carlisle also had the lowest price for a pint costing only £3.
The research also found the price of transport in Carlisle costed an average of £54.35 a month in comparison to Canterbury at £100.
Other factors taken into account included job opportunities, however Carlisle had the lowest amount of adverts.
The research said salary was deemed the most important factor for graduates and found people earned £1,770.83 on average in Carlisle.
In the top 10 of the best cities for graduates, Preston was third and other cities in the top 10 included Coventry, Newcastle and Birmingham.
Compare the Market scored all cities in the UK between 0 and 2 using 14 factors in total using several sources including the Office for National Statistics.
The total score was converted into a percentage which reflected the overall graduate satisfaction.
The firm also published the bottom 10 UK cities for graduates. They included Bath, Cambridge and Oxford, with Westminster at the top of the list with an overall satisfaction rating of 32 per cent.
The bottom cities were ranked the lowest due to high rent prices.
The company said the aim of the list was to help young people determine which cities have the most opportunities.
