Kells have clinched second spot in the Cumbria section of the National Conference when beating Barrow Island 40-18 in their virtual shoot-out.

They will qualify behind 100 per cent leaders Wath Brow Hornets who cruised home 76-6 at Millom.

The Islanders were first to score with an unconverted try from Aiden Wright but by the time they scored again they were trailing 24-4.

James Ennis scored the equalising try which was converted by Jake Parker.

Further tries followed from Harry Watson,Tyrone Dalton and Parker, who converted them all.

Ryan Clegg got the Islanders moving again with a try, which Sam Jones converted but the gap widened again with Watson’s second try for Kells, again improved by Parker.

Back came the south Cumbrians with a second try for Wright but Parker nipped in for his second try and added his sixth conversion.

Ennis added Kells’ seventh try, the only one to go unconverted, before Martin Brum had the final word for Barrow Island with an unconverted try.

In the other Cumbria game Egremont Rangers scored a try from the last play to beat Hensingham 28-24.
