There’s just no end to the heroics from Whitehaven as two tries in the last eight minutes gave them a 22-14 win at Batley.
It followed last week’s remarkable 64-6 thumping of Widnes Vikings and suggests Haven have enough in their locker to surprise both Halifax (h) and Bradford (a) in their final two fixtures.
Batley had gone into the game looking for a strong finish to the season to claim third spot in the play-offs but those hopes now look shattered.
It had been nip and tuck for long periods of the game until the closing stages when tries from Louis Jouffret and Karl Dixon got in for tries.
Going into the closing minutes Haven had trailed 14-12 but Jouffret and Dixon provided good finishes and Lachlan Walmsley added one conversion. Earlier he had scored two first half tries as Haven trailed 10-8 at the break. He also landed two penalties.
Greg Johnson and Ben White had scored the Batley tries with Tom Gilmore landing three goals.
With its infamous slope Batley is always a tough place to visit and once again Gary Charlton’s men proved themselves up to the task.
