An Appleby cafe is launching a new book club in the town.

Lilly’s Cafe in Appleby will hold the first Lilly’s Library Book Club next month.

With Appleby’s Honorary Quidditch Town status, and the opening of the new Cupboard Under the Stairs magical shop in the town, the first book to launch the club will be from the Harry Potter series.

Owners of Lilly’s Cafe, Connor and Abi Ruehorn-Hyd, have been inspired to launch the new free book club by their own love of reading and a passion for creating a friendly meeting place.

Abi said: “I am an avid reader, and our daughter Lilly is also developing a love for books.

“A cafe is a great place to meet up, so we thought we’d build upon this to create an evening where you can come along to enjoy a chat about a book and meet new and old friends once a month.

“Especially with the long, dark, nights ahead of us, it is nice to have an evening to look forward to, where we can come together for a couple of hours for a friendly social event.

“With Appleby’s links to Harry Potter, and being a big Harry Potter fan, the first book we have chosen is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

“However, all the book choices for the next book clubs will be chosen by those who come along. We are inviting everyone to suggest a book to read and they will be put into a sorting hat and the next 12 months’ selections chosen on the first night.”

Lilly’s is also launching Lilly’s Lending Library where people can swap books for free.

Abi added: “If you have any books that are going dusty, they would look great on the shelf.”

Connor said: “We want to give something back to the community in Appleby which has made us so welcome.”

The cafe is licensed for people to bring a bottle of wine with them, or coffee with the book club snacks Abi ad Connor will be preparing for the Lilly’s Library Book Club evening, which starts on Thursday, October 7 from 7.30pm.

Booking is advisable. Message Abi and Connor on their Facebook page @Lilly’s Cafe or pop into the cafe.
