20-year-old appears in court after man stabbed in Alston

A man has appeared in court following a stabbing in Alston at the weekend.

Saul Shepherd, 20, of Alston, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court charged with wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.

Police were called to Alston at around 8.20pm on Saturday after reports that a man, in his 30s, had been stabbed in the abdomen outside the Victoria Inn.

The victim was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Cumbria Police arrested two men following the incident – Shepherd and a 38-year-old man, also rom Alston. 

The 38-year-old man has been released under investigation whilst officers continue with their enquiries.  

Shepherd has been remanded to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on October 12. 

Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed what took place, or who has any other information which may assist, to contact DC 2085 Atkinson or DS 1692 Brumpton.
