Record-breaker Carl Forber wants to stay involved in rugby league with Workington Town when his playing days are over.
Not that the 36-year-old half-back is contemplating hanging up his boots just yet.
He said: ”I don’t know how long I intend to go on playing. I’ve always said as long as my body feels okay and the coach and me both feel I have something to offer then I’ll more than likely carry on playing!! But I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
However when that day does come and those record-breaking boots are finally discarded Forber would like some sort of role at Derwent Park.
He said: “I definitely want to stay involved with the club in some capacity when I do finish playing.!! I don’t mind whether it’s water boy or cone boy or some sort of coaching but we will just have to wait and see!!”
Forber initially joined Town in 2007 after learning the ropes at St Helens and Leigh. He left in 2009 to join Blackpool Panthers and then Oldham before returning to Derwent Park in 2012 – and has been there ever since.
That combination – length of time and his accuracy as a goal-kicker- has led to records tumbling.
In 2019 Forber surpassed Ian McCorquodale’s 40-year-old club record points total to become the new record holder by amassing 1813 points. By August this year he had reached 2,000 points.
Another milestone was reached last Sunday when he reached 300 games for the club in the match with Hunslet.
Forber was signed by Ged Stokes and has played under a long list of coaches at Town – Les Ash, Butch Barker, Dave Rotherham, Phil Vievers, Jonty Gorley, Dave Clarke, Leon Pryce and Chris Thorman.
“It means that I’ve seen a lot of different styles of rugby being coached and in that time a lot of players have come and gone.
“There have been some memorable occasions but I think my best moment came with my try against Rochdale earlier in the year when I intercepted and scored just as the final hooter blew for a dramatic last gasp win.” he said.
As Town fans sit back and watch for the result from the North Wales Crusaders v Keighley match today, they will know that the boot of Carl Forber will be a key weapon when the winners of that match come to Derwent Park for the next stage of the play-offs.
