Some of Carlisle’s best-known buildings have been turning yellow for Hospice Care Week.

The Citadel, Griffin pub, the Station and Crown & Mitre hotels are all being illuminated to recognise and celebrate the work of hospices after a very difficult 18 months – along with the Civic Centre which has displayed a yellow heart.

It coincides with Eden Valley Hospice marking its 30th anniversary this month.

People are being encouraged to get involved, share stories and raise funds and awareness by turning themselves, their friends or their office yellow.

Fundraising ideas include a garden party, ‘yellow’ quiz, car wash or scavenger hunt.

Stephanie Lacaille-Burton, head of income generation and marketing at Eden Valley, said: “After such a difficult period this week is a chance to say thank you for the care our hospices provide.

“The pandemic highlighted that hospices need support more than ever and we’re grateful for that shown by the people of Cumbria and beyond as Eden Valley celebrates its 30th birthday.

“Hospice care is a vital service across the entire country, ensuring that people with life-limiting illnesses are cared for with dignity and compassion.

“Many hospices, including Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, are independent, local charities, relying on the support of the local community to ensure personalised, high-quality care can be delivered.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to both raise awareness of hospice care, and thank our wonderful supporters for ensuring hospice care can continue, now and into the future.”
