Wath Brow under-12s

Wath Brow Under-12s played their final game of the season – and made it a winning one.

They were up against Seaton Rangers in the West Cumbria Youth League top four final for that age group.

Seaton were the League champions, having suffered only one defeat all season, but on this occasion it was Wath Brow who came out on top 10-4 after an absorbing contest.

For a team which has played throughout the season with both grit and determination it was a result well deserved.

The final turned out to be great game and a fantastic advert for youth rugby league in West Cumbria.

The Brow looked sharp in both attack and defence but their forwards had to work really hard to match their opposite numbers.

The opening score came when Alex Powe burst through the Rangers defence to give them the lead with an unconverted try.

This brought an immediate response from Seaton and the Brow had to work over-time to keep them at bay. Eventually the Seaton pressure took its toll and they levelled the score before half-time with an unconverted try by Rhys Bold.

The second half saw both teams probing their rivals’ defences but the Brow youngsters started to look the liveliest of the teams, but again it was hard for either team to break through.

Eventually a piece of magic from the Brow’s full-back Powe break from his marker to step and turn his way past six would be defenders to touch down under the sticks. Billy Joe Towers converted.

The final minutes of the game were frantic as both teams attacked and defended with passion and determination, but  the Hornets were able to hang-on and claim the victory to pick up the top-four trophy for the 2021 season.

The winning team was: Alex Powe, Jack Baker, Evan Sherwen, Tom Banner, Aston Walker, Billy Joe Towers, Brady Todd, Casson Chadwick, Olsen Sharp, Dion Maudling, Kyron McDonald, Henley Davidson, Conrad Dockwray, Joseph Pringle, Zack Green. Man of the match: Billy Joe Towers.

Meanwhile Wath Brow Hornets youth sections have welcomed a new sponsor to the club for the 2022 season.

A Brow spokesman said: “We are extremely grateful that a prominent local company Coombe & Sharpe have now become one of the main youth sponsors at the club.

“As a company they pride themselves on the quality of their workmanship and customer service. They aim to deliver the best landscaping service whatever the customer’s design and budget needs.”
