Work has begun to demolish part of Carlisle’s Civic Centre.
The Octagon building is being knocked down as part of phase two of the centre’s improvement work.
A spokesman for the city council said: “As we have made substantial improvements to the ground floor, including a new customer contact centre and new layout that includes a new space to host council meetings, the Octagon is now not needed.”
The demolition, being carried out by Story, is expected to take several months.
Once complete, the space left will be converted into additional car parking spaces and a public realm.
The next-door civic centre car park is closed during the work.
