Holders Carlisle United moved through to the third round of the County Cup last night with a 3-0 win over Northbank at Penrith’s Frenchfields.
They scored twice in the first 12 minutes and had another disallowed in a dominant start, but had to wait until the 87th minute to score a third.
Taylor had cut a ball back for Hill to score on only three minutes but the ball was over the by-line before he crossed.
Taylor was an early danger to Northbank and it was from one of the corners he had earned that United took the lead. Kilsby thumped the ball home from close range.
Carlisle doubled their lead on 12 minutes through Charters who made a driving run from midfield before finishing strongly with a low shot from the edge of the area.
Northbank then had a good spell and United keeperBreeze had to be alert, racing out of goal to clear as Smith fancied his chances. The follow-up from Johnston could have found the target but Kilsby was there to clear.
Taylor continued to offer a threat with his pace and when he whipped in another cross Leslie had got forward from mid-field but glanced his header just wide.
At the other end Northbank were close in similar fashion. Johnston floated a deep free kick into the area and Gallimore’s downward header was narrowly past the upright.
The young United side went close before the break with Leslie having a shot on the turn parried by keeper Carruthers and Fishburn’s follow-up was charged down.
The final act of the half saw determined work from Hill, linking with Charters, ending in a shot against the post which rebounded across goal but couldn’t be forced home.
Northbank went close soon after the re-start when a well=taken free-kick from Johnston had Breeze scrambling to turn over the bar.
Breeze then had to deal with a snap-shot from Slack who reacted well to a half chance.
Charters, the most experienced of the Carlisle youngsters, was more and more dominant in midfield and after being brought down on the edge of the area fired the free-kick off the outside of the post.
United kept going and Ellis was wide with a header he probably shou;ld have done better with.
Credit to Northbank who had stayed in the contest at 2-0 and they had a late chance when Johnston produced a fine pass to give Travers a chance but he shot straight at Breeze.
The tie was wrapped up on 87 minutes when Northbank dwelt on the ball in defence and Fishburn was there to finish off.
