An environmental charity has appointed a new chairwoman as it appeals for new volunteer trustees to join the board.

West Cumbria Rivers Trust has appointed Trish Dunlop, head of nuclear safety at Sellafield, as the new chairwoman of its Board of Trustees, and is looking for additional volunteer trustees to join the board.

Trish has been a member of West Cumbria Rivers Trust’s Board since 2019, helping to oversee the trust’s governance and strategy. She started her career as a pollution inspector with what is now the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and for the last 20 years has worked for Sellafield in a variety of roles relating to compliance and improvement for environment, health and safety.

Trish said: “I’ve had a passion for the environment since persuading my chemistry teacher to take our sixth form class on a trip to the local sewage works, and it has been a continued theme through my professional career.

“I’ve relished bringing up my three children to enjoy the fells, rivers and lakes in this beautiful place in which we are lucky to live, so I’m delighted to have this opportunity to play a key role with the Trust in raising awareness and increasing understanding of West Cumbria’s rivers and lakes.”

Jodie Mills, director at West Cumbria Rivers Trust, said: “Trish is a great asset to the Board of Trustees and the whole team is really excited to have her leading the organisation.

“Trish is handed the baton from our former chairman Dave Magrath, who I would like to thank for his wisdom and dedicated commitment to the trust.”

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is seeking to expand its board with the addition of a treasurer with experience in charity finance, and trustees with experience in the conservation, education or volunteering sectors, or simply a real passion for rivers and something they feel they can contribute to the governance of the organisation.

Jodie said: “Our trustees play a vital role in overseeing our strategy, generously volunteering a few hours a month of their time because they’re passionate about our cause.

“These new members of our board will enhance the wide-ranging skill set of our existing trustees and contribute to the next phase of our growth. There is also the opportunity to get stuck into our conservation work and get your hands dirty, if that’s something that appeals.”
