Scotland are out of the T20 World Cup after losing to New Zealand in their third group game in Dubai.
But it was a memorable occasion for former Whitehaven professional Safyaan Sharif, who has bowled consistently throughout the tournament.
On this occasions his hard-work and disciplined bowling was rewarded with two wickets in one over – including the prized one of the New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for a four-ball duck.
He had Williamson caught behind by Matthew Cross after earlier trapping opener Daryl Mitchell leg before for 13.
He finished his four overs with 2-28 which helped limit New Zealand to 172-5.
George Munsey, who has played three times for Carlisle as a sub pro, started well with two big sixes before being caught on the boundary by a superb diving effort from Tim Southee for 22.
Scotland made a bold show in response but after their 20 overs had reached 156-5.
The Scots have lost all three games so far and still have to face India and Pakistan.
Sharif played as a pro for Whitehaven in the 2019 season when he scored 400 runs from 16 innings at am average of 30.62. He also took 31 wickets at an average of 18.77.
The 30-year-old Huddersfield-born Sharif appeared for Kent during the 2021 season’s T20 Blast competition.
