People will have the chance to find out more about proposed changes to the planning system by the Government at a Question Time-style event in Kendal this month.
Organised by Kendal Civic Society, the event on Friday, November 12, will discuss a recently published White Paper by the Government and people will be able to put questions to the panel of Dan Hudson, planning strategy lead for South Lakeland District Council, John Holmes, a district councillor and planning committee member, Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron and Joan Humble, national chair of Civic Voice, the umbrella organisation for civic societies.
A group of experts will also attend, including planners, architects and designers.
It takes place at the Box from 7pm.
The White Paper, published in July 2020, proposes fundamental changes to the planning system, including:
- Housing targets and a lot of general policies being determined nationally
- The determination of development principles through local plans with reduced scope for consultation on planning applications and the role of planning committees
- A switch from judgement based planning decisions to rules based zoning and coding
- The determination of planning applications in line with design codes
- New arrangements for funding infrastructure and affordable housing
