
Cup-ties took precedence over other fixtures this weekend with Cumberland County League teams.
The Benevolent Cup tie involving Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves and Windscale Reserves was switched to the all-weather facility at Netherhall School in Maryport.
Both clubs agreed to move the game to a Thursday evening due to the flooding issues at the Amateurs ground. The move suited Whitehaven more as the ran out 4-2 winners.
The Amateurs’ goals came from Nathan McGlennon, Travis Fyfe and two from Rob Postlethwaite while Windscale stayed in the game with efforts from Andrew Marshalsea and Daniel vina Bordel.
There were a number of high-scoring games in the Conway Cup, the biggest coming in the tie between Workington Reds Development and Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves on the plastic at St Benedict’s High School, Whitehaven.
The Reds Development cracked in 10 goals without reply. The scorers for Reds were Carl Lightfoot, Aidan Howarth, Matty Foster and Josh Palmer with two each from Elliott Lowry, James Bell and Tom Houghton, one from the penalty spot.
Gosforth entertained Workington Athletic but it was the visitors who eased home 6-1. Matthew Perry and Tom Whitehead both hit the net twice with Tom Pardini and Ryan Connelly completing the total. Gosforth’s lone response came from Rhys Singleton.
Pirelli and Aspatria were involved in a seven-goal tie with the Carlisle side coming out on top 5-2.
The Pirelli goals came from Kieron Blair (2), Jack Irving, Luke Firth and Jordan Atkinson, with Will Hodgson and Shaun Smith providing the goals for Aspatria.
There were also seven goals in the Whitehaven Miners v Northbank tie which also finished with a 5-2 score line. The game was switched to the Lakes College 3G due to the Miners pitch being under water.
Lewis Park and Owen Woods claimed the Miners’ goals with Northbank progressing to the next round courtesy of strikes from Jack Little, Jay Green, Kevin McKenna and Brendan Box-Gill, with the total completed by a Miners’ own goal.
The Premier Division game between Carlisle City Development and Cockermouth ended in a 3-1 victory for the visitors. City were unfortunate to gift Cockermouth an own goal to get the ball rolling, with Callum West and Keith Skillen adding the other two. The Development side reduced the arrears with a Robbie Cowley effort.
In Division One, UniSun travelled to Silloth and came away with a 4-1 victory. Shane Dorward helping himself to a couple for UniSun, supplemented by efforts from Luke Ruddick and Alex Park. Silloth replied through Dan Jeffries.
