Aquatic therapy at Calvert Reconnections

Calvert Reconnections in Keswick has launched a new aquatic therapy programme.

Reconnections’ new programme has been funded through the Band Trust. After a significant investment in the centre’s indoor pool, new facilities include an underwater treadmill and underwater balance obstacle course.

The new programme is being led by highly specialised neuro-physiotherapist Femke van Schelven, an Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ATACP) Foundation trained physiotherapist with neurological specialism.

Femke said: “We are hugely excited to launch our aquatic therapy programme at Calvert Reconnections.  It brings a whole new dimension to our neuro-rehabilitation service.”

Femke will deliver personalised one-to-one programmes to help participants achieve their rehab goals.

“There is substantial clinical evidence that expertly applied aquatic therapy improves recovery times and patient outcomes.

“Our specialist pool, with its fully adjustable floor, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art aquatic therapy facility with an underwater, self-propelled treadmill.

“While underwater treadmills are widely used in sports rehabilitation, there are few neuro-rehabilitation centres with these facilities. Despite extensive clinical research supporting the benefits of aquatic treadmill therapy, it is extremely difficult for individuals with brain injury to access such therapy,” Femke added.

Calvert Reconnections, which opened in June, is delivering a ground-breaking new approach to ABI rehabilitation by combining traditional clinical therapies with a focus on outdoor activities.

Femke added: “Our aquatic therapy programme will complement our clinically designed outdoor activities perfectly.

“It will allow participants to challenge their balance more within the safety of the water, and allow people to push themselves harder without the high impact of the dry land treadmill. It is a great combination and we are delighted to be able to make this unique form of rehab possible.”

Claire Appleton, head of service at Calvert Reconnections, said: “We are hugely grateful to the Band Trust for their generosity.

“Aquatic therapy further strengthens our world-class rehabilitation programme tailored to support individuals in their recovery from brain injury.”
