A bakery is getting behind a campaign after being inspired by the heroic fundraising efforts of three dads who completed a 300-mile walk in memory of their daughters lost to suicide.
Aidan Monks, of Lovingly Artisan Bakery, based at Plumgarth’s near Kendal, is using the excuse of National Homemade Bread Day today to do something in support of a very dear friend, George Airey, and a cause very close to her heart.
George was one of the bakery’s first customers when it was based at Oxenholme. She was a customer who very quickly became a friend and had more than a slight addiction to the cheese and chilli sourdough bread, hence her nickname.
This very special friendship blossomed over the years and George and Andy Airey lost their daughter Sophie, 29, just before Christmas 2018.
Completing the 300-mile 3 Dads Walking challenge alongside Andy Airey was Mike Palmer, whose daughter Beth was just 17 when she took her own life in March 2020, a few days after Tim Owen’s 18-year-old daughter Emily also died.
For the next five days from National Homemade Bready Day today, all those that book a place on Lovingly Artisan Bakery’s Discover Sourdough Workshop running on February 20, will have their full workshop fee donated to PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide in honour of 3 Dads Walking and to do something for their dear friend.
If you fancy learning all about making sourdough, this is your week to book and help support the work this amazing charity does.

Aidan said: ‘’It might sound strange, but our customers become part of our bakery family, you build relationships, and they last for years, which is why we wanted to do a little something to support one of our family friends. As a dad myself I wanted to help in some small way and this seems like a small act of kindness, one that all of our customers can get involved with and help all of the George’s and Andy’s out there. Together we can all do a little bit more…’’
If you don’t fancy learning to bake but want to help raise further funds for PAPYRUS you can buy a copy of George’s poster Doors of the Camino, which she photographed when walking the Way of St James (Camino) from St Jean Piet de Port, in the French Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain, in Sophie’s memory.
The posters are available from her website https://www.sophieswalk.co.uk/ or via https://www.3dadswalking.uk
