Barrow Town Hall will be lit up orange in support of an international campaign to eliminate violence towards women and girls on November 25.

The campaign – 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Abuse – is aimed at businesses and organisations to help support them to take action against domestic abuse and violence while also understanding how they can do more to help protect their employees.

The campaign, supported by Public Health England, runs from Thursday – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women until December 10 – International Human Rights Day.

Barrow Borough Council has already committed to a domestic abuse policy as well as working in partnership with the borough’s flagship domestic abuse project, Women’s Community Matters.

The council have specially trained staff, known as domestic abuse champions, who are able to give advice and support to anyone experiencing abuse; they will help co-ordinate a response that will provide a safe, effective and confidential approach to ensure any victim receives the right support and get them the help they need.

Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council and who is also a volunteer and chair of trustees at Women’s Community Matters, said: “It should be our mission to raise awareness and support this campaign in order to help eliminate domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.

“The council’s domestic abuse policy recognises that this issue is a widespread problem that cannot and shouldn’t be ignored. The council is dedicated to creating a working environment

that promotes the understanding that everyone has the right to live free from violence and abuse while also supporting those who are suffering from the hands of domestic abuse.

“This campaign is also an opportunity for businesses and organisations to be involved to help take action against domestic abuse and violence.”
