“South lakes is the worst affected part of the region.
“Up to 7,500 people are still affected. There is a 33,000 volt line down and they need to repair and replace 6 ‘spans’ – he has promised me he will put 20 teams working on it tonight and in the morning with all properties to be connected by 4pm tomorrow.
“I asked if he could ensure that as many communities as possible could he reconnected this evening. I made it very clear to him that there are thousands struggling in our communities, many of whom are older, vulnerable or families with young children- his team have rung 4,500 vulnerable homes already and are still calling to offer support.
“He also mentioned that if you have no power tonight and need somewhere else to stay then call the police on 101 and then will arrange for you stay in a hotel, paid for by ENW. I’ll keep on pestering until everyone is back on.”

9.33pm
Agencies across Cumbria are continuing their response to Storm Arwen and the subsequent power outage which may continue to impact many throughout tonight (27 November).
Electricity North West are working to restore power as soon as possible to those who remain without electricity. Over 50,000 homes have had power restored, however thousands more households may be without electricity overnight.
A co-ordinated effort is underway to support those who are without power, with provisions and supplies being prioritised to those deemed most vulnerable – who agencies are contacting directly.
With low temperatures expected to continue throughout the night, motorists are asked to take care if they are travelling. Some petrol stations have been impacted by the power outage and drivers are encouraged to be mindful of this ahead of any journey.
Many of the roads impacted by the high winds during the past 24 hours have been cleared. Motorists are encouraged to continue to drive to the conditions.
The public are requested to kindly continue to look after vulnerable people in their communities; if you are aware of an individual who is vulnerable, please check on them and support them, make sure they have the right medication and provisions. If they do require medication or care, please contact their care provider as soon as you are able.
If you see power lines down, do not approach them. Report them to Electricity North West on 105.
Who to contact:
- If you wish to report a problem on the county’s roads, please contact Cumbria County Council Highways Hotline on 0300 303 2992, or report online via the County Council website.
- For power cuts contact Electricity North West on 105, but please only call if your query is urgent to help prioritise customers in the most vulnerable circumstances.

The moor woke up to the first snow of the season today which brought normal life to a halt.
Unable to see plans through, many people went to walk in the snow and see the Pennines in a more picturesque light.
Here is a collection of readers’ photos from Alston today:
3.33pm: The weather couldn’t dampen Shap’s community spirit.
Despite snow, low temperatures and high winds Shap Farmers’ and Makers’ Market went ahead this morning.
Scores of people visited the fundraising event that showcased local artisans and Tebay-based band the Lidos.
There were some delays in getting going with stall-holders from further afield slowed by trees down across several routes.
However, parish chairwoman Jean Jackson heralded the event a success and thanked people for coming.
3.25pm: Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team has just shared that members were called out to several incidents overnight on various higher minor roads. The team added: “It doesn’t take long for wind blown snow to drift and the roads to become treacherous.”

Teams from Honister Slate Mine worked to move stranded cars and grit the road and the pass became driveable just after 10am.
“It’s normal,” said a spokeswoman for Honister Slate Mine. “It happens all the time. Someone always has to be here so if we can’t drive up, we walk up.
“Ice is the biggest problem. The whole road was frozen solid.”
She added that while its gritted, motorists should take extra care still when tackling the pass. The slate mine is fully open.

Power
Highs winds hit the region overnight which caused damage to the overhead electricity network, as well as falling trees blocking roads causing delays to engineers reaching equipment to make repairs.
The weather caused 69,000 properties to lose power overnight, with Electricity North West engineers having restored 37,600 by 7.30am this morning. As repairs are made further damage and power cuts in other areas are expected due to the continuing high winds.
Wind speeds topped 60mph overnight made conditions unsafe for engineers to climb electricity poles to repair damage in many areas.
As well as continually monitoring the weather, Electricity North West was well prepared with more than 70 extra engineers on standby overnight ready to respond.
