Workington Town full-back Gabe Fell has been released from the second year of his contract.
Significant changes in his circumstances have meant the popular member of the Town squad has not enough time to devote to rugby league.
The club said: “Everyone at Town wishes Gabe all the very best for the future. We said we were here for him forever and we meant it.”
Fell suffered a family tragedy during last season with the loss of his father Dave, himself a former professional with Salford and Rochdale.
He said: “I’ve made the really tough decision to leave due to work commitments and wanting to spend much more time with my family.
“I just want to say a massive thank-you to the board, the staff, the players and the fans for the brilliant times and great memories I’ve made at Workington Town.”
He first played for Town in 2017 on loan from Wigan where he’d started in the Academy. He scored nine tries in 12 games.
Fell then had a spell with Swinton Lions before joining Town on a permanent basis for the truncated 2020 season.
Meanwhile Town’s game with Sheffield Eagles has been switched to Derwent Park.
Minor delays to the construction of the Community Stadium, the new permanent home of the Eagles, means that there would be a potential for the fixture not to be played.
With this in mind the game has now been switched to Cumbria on Sunday, March 6 with a 2pm kick-off.
The game on Sunday, July 24 will now be played at Sheffield’s new ground with a 3pm kick-off.
