A court has heard how a man struck his ex-partner in the face inside her own home shortly after she had bravely tried to break up a city street fight involving him.
Elijah Ali, 32, turned up at his former girlfriend’s Harraby house last Sunday, December 5.
Ali was refused entry by the woman and initially left the area. After seeing him near her home in a fight with other men a short time later, she left her address and tried to break up the violence.
Ali was detained by police on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly but, after being taken to hospital, he was de-arrested and returned to the woman’s address.
Once inside, Ali struck his ex-partner to the face as soon as the door was closed.
She later said that although no injury was caused, the strike really hurt her.Two children were asleep inside another area of the house at the time.
The woman left her home, went to a relative’s property and the police were alerted.
“Some minor psychological effects have been caused to her,” prosecutor George Shelley told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today.
Ali, of the city’s Baird Road, admitted assault by beating.
Magistrates heard he had scores of previous offences to his name and had received a 14-week jail term in July for breaching a court-imposed restraining order — relating to his ex — although this order had since been removed.
Giving mitigation, Chris Toms said Ali had turned to alcohol as he sought to deal with a recent family bereavement.
Magistrates ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Ali is due to be sentenced in a fortnight and in the meantime was granted bail. One condition prohibits him from contacting his former partner.
