Man appears in court after ‘axe chase’ in Penrith

A man has appeared in court after police were called in response to reports of a male being seen with an axe in Penrith.

Officers received a call at 7.50pm on Sunday. It was reported that a man had been witnessed in possession of an axe — allegedly giving chase to people while carrying the implement — and wearing Bermuda-style shorts.

This was said to have occurred around the Morrisons supermarket petrol station forecourt.

A Cumbria police spokesman said in the aftermath there was no suggestion of the axe having been used; nor of anyone being injured in any way.

Police attended and arrested a man. And this afternoon, at Carlisle magistrates’ court, 24-year-old Mario Kanovsky appeared before the bench from custody.

Kanovsky, of no fixed address, faces one charge. This alleges the illegal possession of a bladed article — an axe — at Cromwell Road on December 5.

Assisted by an interpreter during the short hearing, he spoke from the dock to confirm his identity.

Prosecutor George Shelley gave an outline of the incident to magistrates, who committed the case to Carlisle Crown Court.

Kanovsky is due to appear in front of a judge on January 6. He did not enter a plea to the charge that he faces, and in the meantime was remanded in custody by the magistrates.
